More than 60 people representing India’s dairy companies, retailers, and non-governmental organisations joined our webinar: “Sustainable dairy business – building back better from Covid-19” on Thursday, 30 July.
A Lively and Interactive Session
In a lively and interactive session, the participants were guided about how dairy animal welfare is linked to sustainable businesses and better dairy systems in India. A brief of our “Better Dairy” campaign was also provided along with how Ananda has committed towards the better welfare of dairy animals in their supply chain. Around 50 million cows and buffaloes are farmed for their milk in the country –more than in any other nation in the world – and many suffer in substandard conditions. The business solutions were provided to the participants on how implementing smaller changes in the system can lead to better production as well as better lives of dairy animals.

A recent report from the UNEP
‘Preventing the next pandemic’ a recent report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) states that “About 60 percent of human infections are estimated to have an animal origin. Of all new and emerging human infectious diseases, some 75 percent “jump species” from other animals to people. Most described zoonoses happen indirectly, eg via the food system.
A balance is required between humans and their surroundings
The need to improve their welfare has been highlighted by the coronavirus and previous pandemics. All the previous pandemics have been caused due to usage or either mishandling of animals in our food systems. Coronavirus has clearly given the evidence that a balance is required between humans and their surroundings. We need to work together to build ‘one health’ for humans and animals. Different Businesses can play their vital role in changing the world by reworking on the food system and make it sustainable.
Important participants in the webinar
The webinar was chaired by Radhey Shyam Dixit, The Chairman of Ananda Dairy and Dr. M.L Kamboj, Principal Scientists at National Dairy Research Institute along with our colleagues from Dr. Nancy Clarke, International Corporate Engagement Advisor, Dr. Kate Blazsak, Global Head of Research and Animal Welfare and Gajender K. Sharma, Country Director, India.
Next Steps
We will be organising a round table discussion with key stakeholders in the Indian dairy industry. Participants will share why they have joined our Better Dairy campaign and signed our “Commitment to Animal Welfare”. This will help us to build an alliance of dairy companies who can take forward our approach within the Indian dairy industry – essential for our work.
